Social Studies Coordinator
In September of 2007, I took a new job as Social Studies Coordinator for Broken Arrow Public Schools. Since taking this job, I have come to realize a few things:
- I miss being with kids, so I'm always making opportunities to get back into the classroom.
- I love the chance to impact students and teachers on a larger scale.
- Being the social studies coordinator has helped me learn a lot more about history, geography, and other things. (This is probably not surprising.)
- Being the social studies coordinator has helped me learn a lot more about teaching in general, and so it has actually helped to inform my understanding of teaching English. (This is probably surprising.)
- Looking at a bigger picture has helped me to better understand all of the ways in which teaching is the same across disciplines.
- I have a great love and respect for teachers.
When Broken Arrow offered me the job as Social Studies Coordinator, I couldn't believe it. I've been wanting to do something new, something that required me to do different things with my brain, something that would make me work a little harder. I always try to convince my students that the learning happens in the struggle. I realized that if I really do believe those words, then I should accept the new challenges that come my way, right? I should not run from change but embrace it.
