What I Did on my Summer Vacation

The day after school was out,in May of '07
we went to Meramec Caverns.
Emma wanted to go in, but as soon as we got in,
she wanted to get back out.

It was dark and damp, and she wasn't very sure about it.

She remembers it fondly, though. Go figure.

Emma took this picture on our trip to Cleveland, Memorial Day weekend.
This was the day after school was out,
when we stopped in St. Louis.

Emma took the best picture of the Arch that day.

We stayed at Grandpa Grubb's house in Cleveland
even though he was in China at the time.

Emma and her daddy can be pretty goofy.

We found a fire house having an open house,
and we got to sit in some fire trucks.

Emma pretended she was talking on a radio
and asked me how to get to the fire.

The T-Rex really did startle us,
but after a while we relaxed enough to get a picture...

Then we ran off as quickly as possible.

It was a rainy summer almost everywhere we went.
I came back from teaching in Ft. Worth
(where it poured every day)
to meet my family in Angel Fire, NM,
for our vacation.

Crossing the Red River was scary.
The river looked high enough to wash away the bridge.

In between storms, the clouds looked like moutains
or skyscrapers..
or...just...clouds.
But they sure were purty.

Since I went through OKC,
I got to have dinner with my mom.
Doesn't she look fabulous?

That's her dog, Rhoda.

Emma took this picture
of a motel we stayed in along the way.

Emma took this picture
when she disocvered that she had slept in a pink bed.

You can't tell this,
but she is using the little soaps to make ears.
She opened every soap package in the room.

We stopped to explore the Capulin Volcano.
We walked down to the vent of the volcano.

Notice the slope of the path.

Emma, Alex, and Jake

On the rim. Emma talked about Capulin Volcano
for the rest of our vacation.
"Is that Capulin Volcano, Mommy?" she asked me, pointing to another mountian.

"Are we going back to Capulin Volcano?"

Up high and looking down into the vent

At the house in Angel Fire,
Emma made a new friend: the rock.

She named the rock "Treehouse."

We found lots of different parks to play in.
Emma learned this new word: shelter.
There was a storm a day,
and a couple of times, we had to take shelter.

We rode a chairlift
up a mountain
in Red River...
in between storms.

I wrote a story about this special day.
Click here if you'd like to read it.

We found a shelter up there,
but we didn't need it...not yet.

The picture on the left looked familiar to me,
so I dug into my albums and found this:

Emma takes pictures of Jake in the shelter.

Paynorama from the Top of the Mountain

I call this one:
All Good Things Must Come to an End.

And another storm was coming...

See?

We did beat it down the mountain, and we took shelter in the van. The van protected us as we climbed another mountain in the sleet.

On another day, some serious hikers
did some serious hiking.

More hiking...
Time for a bedtime story...

How a Child Experiences a Road Trip

On our way back, we stopped in Santa Fe and played at the Children's Museum there...great place!

Emma plays dress up.

Daddy plays too.
Jake plays too.

Fun With Bubbles...really BIG bubbles

Emma makes a tortilla all by herself...

and
(not pictured)
Mommy helps her eat it.

This is Kayla, a friend we met in a cafe in Angel Fire. While we played at the Santa Fe Children's Museum two days later, we heard Kayla shout, "Emma!" and the friends were reunited.
Another Pair of Pictures...

Sean says he took a picture of Emma
in the same McDonald's on the way back from NM
on another year...
so I'm waiting for him to dig through his albums...

When he finds it, it'll probably look a lot like this picture
in the yellow slide.
